A Romantic Newfields Engagement Session with Leigha & Ryan | Indianapolis Wedding Photographer

There’s nothing quite like kicking off a new season with an engagement session full of laughter, love, and a couple who fully trusts the process. Leigha & Ryan’s spring engagement session at Newfields on April 11th, 2025, marked the unofficial start to our 2025 season — and it couldn’t have started on a better note.

Even on a slightly chilly evening in the low 50s, Newfields felt magical. Rarely do we get the chance to have this beautiful space to ourselves, but on this evening, everything aligned. No waiting for photo spots, no crowds in the background — just the two of them, a serene garden atmosphere, and golden light wrapping everything in calm.

Their Love Story: From Purdue to Forever

Leigha & Ryan’s relationship began back in 2019 when they were both working at a study center at Purdue. “We only saw each other for a few minutes as we changed shifts,” Leigha shared. Then one day, Ryan messaged her. They hung out a few times, and just as the world shut down, something between them opened up. Through FaceTime nights and long conversations, their connection deepened — and they've been together ever since.

Their first official date? Peak 2020 quarantine vibes. They grabbed Dunkin and lunch in Indy, eating everything in the car because dine-in wasn’t an option. “We count that as our first date because I’m not sure when our actual first sit-down date even was,” Leigha laughs.

The Perfect Location for a Classic & Elegant Engagement Session

Newfields — home to the Indianapolis Museum of Art — is one of our favorite engagement session locations in Indianapolis. With well-manicured gardens, timeless architectural details like the Lilly House archways, and seasonal blooms that change by the week, it’s a dream backdrop for couples wanting both classic and romantic imagery.

Leigha & Ryan embraced the full experience. Dressed to the nines in formalwear — a long dress, heels, and a tailored suit — they embodied the look we always recommend: dress like you’re going to a wedding. When your outfits elevate the session, so does the energy of the shoot.

One of our favorite stops? The orchid-filled greenhouse, a burst of color and detail tucked among the peaceful gardens.

What to Wear for Your Newfields Engagement Photos

When couples ask what to wear for their session at Newfields, we offer this simple rule: Dress like it’s the fanciest date night you’ve had in years. Long flowing gowns, sharp suits, heels that give you a boost — it all adds up to timeless photos that feel as special as your relationship.

And if you’re still unsure? This guide from The Knot is a great starting point: What to Wear for Engagement Photos

Leigha & Ryan were initially nervous about how they would look in photos. “We’re definitely not photogenic,” they joked. But after their session? “These sessions always make us feel a lot more confident for the next round!”

Tips for Making Your Engagement Session a Success

Here’s a little advice from both us and Leigha:

  • Use your session as part 1 of a date night. We encourage our grooms-to-be to plan a dinner or fun experience after the shoot — a reminder to pause wedding planning and just be engaged.

  • Don’t stress silently. “Communicate with your photographer!” Leigha says. “If you’re worried about a certain angle, or wondering what colors photograph best, just ask!”

  • Trust your photographer’s direction. Leigha mentioned, “Cody is amazing! He gives instant feedback and always corrects to make sure you’re getting the best shot. It takes so much of the nervousness out of getting the photos back.”

Looking Ahead: Their Wedding at Montgomery Creek Ranch

Leigha & Ryan are getting married at Montgomery Creek Ranch on April 18th, 2026. The venue was an easy choice for them — a laid-back, nature-filled space with a disc golf course, walking paths, and an airy feel that aligns with their outdoorsy lifestyle. “It’s also all-inclusive, which we love,” Leigha noted.

We can’t wait to document their wedding day and continue telling their story.
