Downtown Indianapolis Wedding Photographer | Kaylee & Jonathan’s Arts Garden Reception and Big Fat Greek Wedding

Planning Your Wedding Day with Separate Ceremony & Reception Locations

Bride and groom share a first look at their Downtown Indianapolis wedding in front of the Greek Orthodox Church.

One of the most important things to consider when planning your wedding day is logistics, especially when your ceremony and reception are at two different locations, which plays directly into how much wedding day photography coverage you need. Kaylee and Jonathan’s October wedding was a perfect example of how to manage this beautifully. Their ceremony took place at the STUNNING Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Carmel, IN, and the reception was held at the breathtaking Indianapolis Arts Garden (one of our favorite downtown Indianapolis wedding venues) in downtown Indianapolis.

While these two venues created a perfect contrast of tradition and modern elegance, planning for the logistics was key to making their day flow smoothly. We even had time to stop at one of our favorite places in Indianapolis to take photos: The Indiana War Memorial

The Importance of Timelines

Creating a well-thought-out timeline is the backbone of a successful wedding day when your ceremony and reception are off-site from each other. For Kaylee & Jonathan, the ceremony was set to take place earlier in the day, which meant they had ample time between the church and the reception to capture portraits with family and friends.

Key tips for managing your timeline:

  • Buffer Time: Make sure to leave ample buffer time between the ceremony and reception, especially if you’re traveling between locations. This ensures no one feels rushed, and it gives your photographer plenty of time for portraits.

  • Transportation: Consider providing transportation for your guests if your ceremony and reception venues are far apart. It helps your guests relax and ensures that everyone arrives on time.

  • Coordination with Vendors: Make sure your photographer, videographer, and wedding planner are aware of your timeline and locations so they can seamlessly transition between the two sites.

With the beautiful Greek Orthodox traditions during the ceremony, Kaylee & Jonathan’s day began with cultural richness and family focus. They then had a window of time to enjoy their first moments as a married couple before heading to the Indianapolis Arts Garden.

Why We Love the Indianapolis Arts Garden for Wedding Receptions

The Indianapolis Arts Garden is one of our absolute favorite wedding venues. Its iconic glass dome, suspended above the streets of downtown Indianapolis, creates a setting that feels both grand and intimate at the same time. It’s truly a unique space, combining modern architecture with stunning city views. This venue allows for magical light to pour in during the day, and as the night progresses, the city lights provide a romantic glow for the reception.

Key benefits of the Arts Garden:

How to Have the Best Wedding Day Ever: See Each Other First!

One of the best ways to enjoy your wedding day to the fullest is to maximize your time together, and for Kaylee & Jonathan, that meant doing a “first look.” Many couples wonder if they should wait until the ceremony to see each other, but from our experience, seeing each other before the ceremony can create some of the most intimate and memorable moments of the day.

Why You Should Do a First Look

A first look is an intimate moment where you and your partner see each other before the ceremony. It's often private, away from the crowd of guests, which makes it a more personal experience. For Kaylee & Jonathan, their first look allowed them to savor the moment without any distractions. Jonathan’s face lit up when he saw Kaylee in her wedding dress for the first time, and the photos from that moment are nothing short of magical.

Advantages of a First Look:

  • More Time Together: Your wedding day goes by in a flash, and a first look ensures you get more time with each other. After all, it’s your day!

  • Reduced Nerves: Many couples feel that seeing each other before the ceremony helps ease the nerves. Once the first look is over, they feel more relaxed and can focus on the joy of the day.

  • More Photo Opportunities: With a first look, you’ll have more time to take portraits before the ceremony, which means you can spend more time with your guests during the cocktail hour and reception.

Spending Your Day with Your Favorite People

Another way Kaylee & Jonathan made the most of their day was by ensuring they were surrounded by their closest family and friends throughout the entire event. From getting ready with their bridal party in the morning to dancing with their loved ones in the evening, they truly embraced the celebration of love and friendship.

Ways to Prioritize Time with Loved Ones:

  • Pre-Ceremony Activities: Start your day by having your bridal party and family involved in getting ready. It adds a fun, relaxed vibe, and those candid moments can create some of the best memories.

  • Group Photos: Instead of waiting until after the ceremony, take family and group portraits either before or right after the first look. This way, you can enjoy cocktail hour with your guests.
